Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2011
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/1/2011
This ancient red wool sweater with the chain-stitched winged wheel on the chest dates back to the late-1950s or early-1960s period. This coarse uniform is littered with pilling and at least 10 team repairs in a combination of thread work and wool darning. The number "19" appears on the back in tackle twill and the numeral shows up again high up on each arm. The Wings began wearing this style arm numbers circa 1958-59 and switched to durene fabric in 1962-63. Research shows that a number of players donned the number 19 during this window of opportunity including L. Marcon, T. McCarthy, G. Strate, G. Ehman (all in 1958-59), L. Marcon, P. Goegan (in 1959-60), P. MacDonald (1960-61) and Val Fonteyne (1961-62). The interior reveals a tiny Coane size 46 tag sewn into the side seam. A wonderful old wool for your Original Six sweater collection!
