Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction - June 2009
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/16/2009
Although he never witnessed a championship game, Frederick Arthur Stanley, Governor General to Canada, purchased for the price of ten guineas a trophy bearing his name for presentation to the amateur hockey champions of Canada. The Stanley Cup has since become the symbol of professional hockey supremacy. As Lord Stanley died in 1908 his autograph is usually absent from even the most complete of Hall-of-Fame collections. This flowing fountain ink section of creamy linen paper has been cut from a letter and is signed "FA Stanley" in his hand. As most examples of his signature are of the "Derby" variety, this pre-1893 "Stanley" variation is a scarce find. Simply add a photo along with a matte and frame for an elegant display. In excellent condition.
