Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2018

One of the last lines of defence – and definitely the deadliest – to the Habs impregnable fortress throughout their late-1970s Stanley Cup dynasty, Larry Robinson delivered bone-crushing hits throughout his 17 seasons with les Canadiens, winning six Stanley Cups along the way. The HOFer also holds the NHL record for most consecutive playoff seasons with 20, 17 of them with Montreal. We have Larry’s original 1976 Stanley Cup championship trophy, and its history is almost as interesting as the item itself. According to the accompanying detailed letter from our consignor, this important keepsake was spotted sticking out of the swamp near Nepean, an Ottawa suburb circa-1986. Standing a majestic 13” and mounted to a dark wooden base, the names of the men who made it happen are engraved in two columns beneath Habs executives, with “Montreal Canadiens” and “1975-76” engraved above.
Heavy tarnishing (along the front of the base), spotting and surface loss is visible, with additional wear to the black base, with the back section “squared off”, most likely to facilitate display against a flat background. Regarding the provenance, the trophy ended up appearing in the mud due to the previous loss from a break-in at Robinson’s cottage near Cornwall in the late-1970s. Larry was contracted through his sister in law, with our consignor told to keep the important treasure. The story also appeared in a local Ontario newspaper that summer.
