Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 4/30/2024
Created by cartoonist Ham Fisher, and debuting on April 19, 1930, the Joe Palooka comic strip featured the exploits of a gentle-giant boxer, with the strip carried by over 900 newspapers at it's peak. We have a lot that includes Palooka items with a "Fighting Mad" half sheet movie poster from 1948, circa 1940s Palooka child's boxing gloves, a Palooka punching bag and a Palooka air pump. First, the poster is 22" x 28" and in lower grade, sporting a number of creases and edge tears. Next, the youth-sized boxing gloves and punching bag have Palooka labels, with the punching bag made by Medalist. Both items show wear from use, with some fraying to the material on the gloves near the laces. The punching bag is currently filled with cotton to hold the "inflated" shape. The air pump is 11" in length and features a colour image of Palooka with "Joe Palooka Punching Bag". There is some discolouration to the metal components and light surface wear.
