Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction - June 2009

This fantastic original Ottawa Senators framed team photo celebrates the NHL’s first Stanley Cup dynasty. The nine original Senators pictured here -all members of the Hall of Fame - made up the first team in the newly-formed league to win the Cup in consecutive seasons in 1920 and 1921. Led by Clint Benedict’s five shutouts in the 1919-20 season and the scoring exploits of Frank Nighbor, Jack Darragh and Cy Denneny, Tom Gorman’s Senators hosted the final and claimed a five-game win over the Pacific Coast Hockey Association champion Seattle Metropolitans. Virtually the same cast of players was on hand the following season when Ottawa defended its title, traveling west to defeat Vancouver, three games to two. Hall of Fame defenceman Sprague Cleghorn left the Senators during the 1920-21 season to play for Toronto, but rejoined Ottawa for the Cup final. The top row of portraits features individual 9 ½" x 7" photos of Benedict, Harry "Punch" Broadbent, Nighbor, Denneny and George Boucher. A photo of the original Stanley Cup is in the middle of the bottom row, with Gorman and Cleghorn to its right, and Eddie Gerard and Darragh on the left. The massive montage is displayed in a brown matte and presented in a huge 25" x 43 ½" wood frame. A great piece for Stanley Cup collectors as the Senators went on to win a third title in four years in 1923, and another Cup in 1927.
