Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2025
A product of the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers, Gene Campbell would first don the famed red, white and blue colours of the United States of America at the 1955 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championships in West Germany where he would help his home country to a fourth (4th) place finish. Returning to the United States National Team for the 1956 Winter Olympic Games in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, Campbell would post a pair of points in seven (7) games played as the United States won the silver medal, the same result that they achieved four (4) years prior. Offered here, and hailing from that fruitful Olympics, is this Team USA uniform hat worn by Campbell. A cold weather offering in the style of a ball cap with ear flaps that could be either tied up or folded down for warmth/wind protection, the navy coloured head covering with a black leather brim is decorated over the front with a Team USA crest that features embroidered details throughout. Sporting red coloured nylon on the interior as well as a size label that lists the cap as being a size "M" for its effort, the hat shows good evidence of wear through some staining/soiling at the forehead on the interior and over the exterior as well. With no cracks or breaks in the brim but showing a tiny amount of fraying at the edge of the leather, the rest of the hat shows no rips or tears to make mention of. Originally hailing directly from the family of Gene Campbell, the piece comes accompanied by a Campbell Family LOA as well as a COA from Heritage Auctions, where it was sold originally.
