Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/27/2018
Each puck originally distributed by Hockey Diversified for the 1972-74 NHL Goal Puck Program could be obtained by mail with the buyer’s choice of team and possibly player. A label was affixed to each puck listing the scorer, team and date, along with a code that divulged which team-goal said puck accounted for. Totaling 4, these particular pucks were all used to score goals for the Detroit Red Wings during the 1972-73 and 1973-74 NHL seasons. We have the pucks used to score the Red Wings 45th goal of the 1972-73 season by Guy Charron on Nov 9th (assisted by Len Fontaine and Gary Bergman), the 61st goal of the 1972-73 season by Bill Collins on Nov 22nd (assisted by Marcel Dionne), the 169th goal of the 1972-73 season by Tim Ecclestone on Feb 3rd (assisted by Marcel Dionne & Nick Libett) and the 49th Red Wings goal of the 1973-74 season, again by Bill Collins, on Nov 18th 1973 (assisted by Nick Libett & Ted Harris).
Regarding condition, the rubberized Red Wings logo on the Nov 22nd Collins puck is fairly dark, while the Goal Puck Program label has heavy wear and marks, with a small section of the label torn away. The Red Wings logo on the Ecclestone puck has some dark discolouration along the bottom along with a slice, with the Goal Puck Program label also exhibiting some dark marks and toning, with a few small gouges to the puck along a pair of edges. The Red Wings logo on the Nov 18th Collins puck is dark and stained, with some discolouration to the Goal Puck Program label along with numerous dark marks. Lastly, the rubberized Bruins logo on the Charron puck has been torn away with just a small piece remaining, with the Goal Puck Program label dark with a large crease present.
In 1972 founders of a company named Hockey Diversified Inc. envisioned that each puck shot into the net to produce an official goal scored in an NHL hockey game would develop a degree of intrinsic collector value for hockey fans everywhere. The founders took this idea to the NHL and procured the rights to all such NHL pucks during regular season and playoff games for a period of five years. Pucks shot into the net for a goal were collected by the referees, given to the time keepers to label and then shipped to Hockey Diversified to further label with scoring details. The pucks were then marketed to the public by Hockey Diversified Inc. Unfortunately this idea was ahead of its time and pucks sold poorly. The program lasted only two seasons, 1972-1973 and 1973-74. Hockey Diversified Inc. dissolved shortly thereafter.
