Filling five of the seven spots on the NHL First All-Star Team including Marty Barry at center and the season’s Vezina Trophy winner Normie Smith between the pipes, the Detroit Red Wings concluded 1936-37 as regular-season champions. The Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers would both be dispatched in five games to allow the boys from Motor City to capture their second-consecutive Stanley Cup championship. Originating from the personal collection of defenceman Bucko McDonald, we have a team-signed photo of the 1936-37 Detroit Red Wings. At 8” x 10”, the vintage glossy black and white print pictures the full team in the traditional on-ice pose, with 23 signing along the base in dark ink, including HOF members Ebbie Goodfellow, Syd Howe, Marty Barry, Herbie Lewis, Jack Adams and Jim Norris Jr. The signatures remain completely bold, with just light wear including toning to the photo.
The additional signers include McDonald, along with Mud Bruneteau, Johnny Sorrell, Larry Aurie, Gordon Pettinger, John Gallagher, Earl Robertson, Scotty Bowman, Normie Smith, Hec and Wally Kilrea and a few others including the three members of the training staff along with backup goaltender Jim Franks. As mentioned, the photo itself shows just light wear with a few minor wrinkles and light touches to the corners. This is as complete as one could possibly hope for regarding signatures from the entire 1936-37 Detroit Red Wings, with the provenance of originating from Bucko McDonald’s collection adding considerable desirability.
