Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/27/2018
Especially pleasing visually and important culturally to Canada, we have a pair of attractive Inuit soapstone carvings including an example for the 1981 Canada Cup along with an “NHLPA Soviets” example from 1982. The Canada Cup carving pictures a wonderfully detailed Inuit with fish, with a small “Coupe Canada Cup 1981” metal plaque centered along the base. The underside has “79” engraved, along with a production number and the artist’s initials. The “Soviet” carving depicts an Inuit seal hunting with his catch wrapped around his shoulders, with an “NHL – NHLPA Soviets” plaque along the base as well as a Canadian igloo sticker on the underside along with the artist’s name and “82”. Signed LOAs from Darryl Sittler will accompany each carving.
Each carving shows light wear, with a few surface abrasions to each, with what appears to be a natural surface line/vein that runs vertically through the center section, over the head and down the reverse of the 1981 Canada Cup carving. There is absolutely no seam or separation of any kind, with this mentioned for strict accuracy.
