Conn Smythe's 1915 University of Toronto hockey diploma is featured in this lot of personal effects that once belonged to the deceased HOFer. Obtained from a friend of the Smythe family, these items also include Major Smythe's eyeglasses and case from World War II, a desk set gifted to Conn by his company's employees on the occasion of his 60th birthday in 1955, and a framed poem, an ode to the Maple Leafs' legendary owner, "A Canadian Legend". Please see our website description for more information about this lot. University of Toronto Athletic Association diploma is displayed in its 18” x 14” wood frame. The diploma certifies that “Conn Smythe is entitled to wear his Colors as a member of the First Junior Hockey (O.H.A. Championship) team 1915 …” and bears two fountain pen signatures from U of T officials, including the president;
Smythe’s round eyeglasses sit in a case with “Major. C. Smythe” handwritten in black ink on a weathered label on the worn lining inside the cover. A newsprint clipping describes how the eyeglasses need to be adjusted to fit inside a gas mask, a stark reminder of Smythe’s World War l service;
Gold-colored desk set includes a penholder with one of its two pens included that is engraved “Presented to Conn Smythe on the occasion of his 60th birthday By the Employees of C. Smythe Limited, February 1, 1955”, a correspondence tray with a lid, a sheath for a missing letter opener, and a covered notepad stand with more than half of its sheets still present;
“A Canadian Legend, To Conn Smythe” is the title of a poem mounted in a 32” x 10 1/2" wood frame signed “With sincere affection, Reg Hopper” and consisting of 11 quatrains, including the likes of “After building many wigwams, And one great longhouse too, A shrine and monument to sport, He showed what a mighty man can do.”
