Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/16/2020
The all-time NHL record holder for most games played by a defenseman, the longevity of Chris Chelios can be further measured by his 26 seasons, with only Gordie Howe equaling the quarter-century plus. Originating from his rookie season and hailing from the personal collection of Canadiens’ legend and Hall of Fame superstar Bob Gainey, we have a photo-matched helmet worn by the three-time Norris winner, in 1983-84. A CCM model in Habs solid blue showing considerable use, Canadiens decals grace each side, with “24” over the reverse. The heavily-worn interior padding is intact minus one pad, with the chin strap dried out and deteriorating. There is also heavy surface wear throughout. A signed LOA from Bob Gainey will accompany.
As mentioned, the helmet shows heavy game use, with considerable wear to both the interior and exterior. Getty Images #75462973 and #174474365 (1983-84 season) have both been matched to the particular pattern of black marks on the foam protector on the right ear side of the helmet.
