The catalyst that brought premier league hockey back to one of the game’s most historically important locales, Bobby Hull was instrumental in helping spawn the infamous WHA, with his acceptance of a million-dollar offer from Winnipeg giving the rebel league credence. The Golden Jet would spend the entirety of the WHA’s seven seasons in River City, and with the assistance of European talent including Ulf Nilsson and Anders Hedberg, Hull would lead the Jets to the Avco Cup finals in five out of seven seasons which included a trio of championships – thus making Winnipeg the most successful club in WHA history and Hull arguably it’s greatest player.
Originating from the 1976-77 WHA season, one that witnessed the Jets finish second in the Western Division before losing a hard-fought seven-game Avco Cup finals to Quebec, we have a Jets jersey worn by Hull, and it’s been video-matched to the final game of the 1977 Avco Cup Finals! Sporting a Harv-Al Knit tag with laundering instructions and “L” size tag along the collar, the vintage mesh jersey measures-out to roughly a size 48. Featuring the traditional Jets team crest with all detailing chain-stitched, “9” in red-over-white tackle twill appears over the sleeves and verso, with “Hull” screened over the affixed nameplate. A dual skate-lace fight strap has also been utilized. Exhibiting nice game-use, scuff and scrape marks are visible over the front and sleeves, with a bit of minor staining along the top of the team crest and over the front band. There are also a few random marks present over the sleeves, with a small slit on the top white striping band over the front. We should also note the heavily faded Hull signature on the reverse “9”, with “1983” discernible, with a lengthy inscription preceding the signature that is now illegible.
Regarding the aforementioned video-match, four different included screen shots from the seventh and final game of the 1977 Avco Cup finals have been matched to; the number "9" on the back which is slightly tilted to the right and its angled position in correlation to the nameplate; to the positioning of the "9" over each sleeve, with the one on the right sleeve placed higher, with it’s bottom edge uneven in correlation to the white striping below, while the one on the left sleeve is placed lower, with the lower edge of the "9" touching the white striping beneath it. We should also mention that the "9" on right sleeve is 3 1/2" (4" with white), while the one on the left sleeve is 3 5/8" (4 1/8" with white). Representing the most successful club in WHA history and worn by one of the most electrifying practitioners the game of hockey has ever witnessed, this paramount specimen commands inclusion within any elitist grouping of the hobby’s finest assemblages.
