No stranger to winning Stanley Cup championships as a player, Bob Gainey turned to both coaching and managing after hanging up his Habs’ sweater, with multiple seasons spent behind the bench and later behind the scenes as General Manager with the Minnesota North Stars/Dallas Stars, redefining the franchise with the acquisitions of Joe Nieuwendyk, Brett Hull, Ed Belfour and Sergei Zubov. Leading his club to the 1998-99 Stanley Cup playoffs, the Stars would post series wins over Edmonton, St. Louis and Colorado before Brett Hull scored his infamous triple-overtime winner vs Buffalo in Game 6 of the finals to secure the first Stanley Cup championship in franchise history. Hailing from his personal collection, this spectacular 1998-99 Dallas Stars Stanley Cup Champions 14K gold and diamond ring was presented to General Manager Bob Gainey. Size 12 with a weight of approximately 52 grams, a bed of shimmering white diamonds surrounds the raised gold star logo in the middle of the tableau, which is filled with five diamond-shaped green precious stones. “Stanley Cup Champions” is spelled out around the bezel in raised letters. The right shank displays “Dallas Stars” across the top with a “Relentless” banner above the old NHL shield. “Gainey” is spelled out across the top of the left shank with an image of the Stanley Cup with “President’s Trophy” and “1999 Stanley Cup Champions” in between. “14K” is stamped to the inner band. The original 7” x 5” x 3” rosewood presentation box is included, with “1999 Stanley Cup Champions” printed on the lining inside the lid, with a signed LOA from Bob Gainey to accompany.
Absolutely stunning with the brilliant sea of diamonds sparkling across the face, the ring remains in wonderful condition, exhibiting signs of wear from use, with tiny dings visible along edges of the band, with additional wear and surface scratches to the band and shanks including a prominent scratch across the outer band. We should also note that the original interior cover that held and displayed the ring within the presentation box is now missing.
