Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024

Unhappy with his current roll as NBC announcer, Mickey Mantle jumped at the chance to rejoin his beloved Yankees - this time in the position of first-base coach as opposed to diamond hero. August 30, 1970 would feature the Mick in his debut as base-skipper, in a victorious contest against the Minnesota Twins - won by the Bombers 5-2. Donning a hastily-repurposed Thurmun Munson jersey where Munson's number 15 was removed and Mickey's 7 sewn-on, the plan was for Elston Howard, the current first-base coach to continue in his roll from the 1st through 3rd innings, Mick to coach the 4th through 6th innings, and again Howard the 7th through 9th. By the end of the season, Mantle's roll as coach ended, with this his last regular-season team association he would have. This full ticket hails from Mickey's debut as coach, and it is graded EX 5 by PSA. Listing the date and opponent, the ticket sports a slightly rough torn edge, with this the only visible flaw. One of only three such tickets graded by PSA over the years, this example is a population 2 highest graded.
