Attractive in their antique utilitarian design, we have an interesting 19th/Early-20th century ice skate collection of 5 pairs, highlighted by two pairs that feature wooden bases. The first wooden base pair include desirable curled blade tips and finished wood bases, with each blade having a small oval termination knob. The second wooden base pair feature arching blade tips that curl into the base, with each stamped “Douglas Rogers Norwich CT” with a patent date of “Mar 17 1869”. Next, we have 2 pairs of solid metal clamp-design skates, with the “Long Beach Club” skates produced by “Keene MF’G” out of Keene NH, with both 1884 and 1888 patent dates, while “The Brownie” pair in size 11 have patent dates of “June 24, 02”. The final pair is very simple in design with a single base and curled blade fronts, with a single opening through each blade to accommodate strapping.
The unmarked wooden base pair feature wonderfully-shaped blade tips with attractive termination ends, with well-shaped wooden bases. Just moderate wear is present, with no rusting or pitting. The second wooden base pair exhibit wear to the bases with a few screws added to one skate, with some pitting to each blade. Each of the solid metal skates exhibit moderate wear, with "The Brownie" pair having some minor rusting over the top of the bases. The final simple metal pair has a dark finish with heavy oxidation, along with some pitting to the blades.
