Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2013
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/18/2013
[red] Addendum; Take note that lot #4 and lot #5 as originally presented in our printed catalogue have been revised. Further research on the gloves has determined that these two lots, which were presented in the catalogue as pairs of photo-matched 1986-87 Wayne Gretzky game-worn gloves, were in fact mismatched. Although this is the way they were presented to us and it’s still a possibility they might have been worn the way they were originally presented in the auction catalogue, the gloves are now properly paired up the way they should have been and each glove is now photo-matched conclusively. In addition to each glove being conclusively photo-matched, each pair is also photo-matched together leaving no doubt they belong together and are actual pairs of photo-matched Wayne Gretzky 1986-87 game-worn Jofa gloves. The new description for this lot is listed below as well as new photos showing all of the photo-match details.[/red]
There's no doubt about it, Wayne Gretzky wore these photo-matched 1986-87 Edmonton Oilers game-worn Jofa gloves at the height of his incredible on-ice powers! The Great One recorded 183 points in 1986-87, including 62 goals, 10 more than the year before when he broke his own NHL records with 163 assists and 215 points. The Oilers were back on top of the hockey world, winning their third Stanley Cup in four years in the spring of 1987. Wayne's legendary number 99 appears in bright orange decals applied to the thumbs of both of his photo-matched Jofa 686 L game-worn gloves. Wayne placed a black marker autograph on the left glove’s orange cuff padding. The slashes of blue paint across the white padding on the right glove offer a bulletproof match to Wayne in action in his 1987-88 Oilers media guide photo. The same photo offers solid matches to the left glove by the diagonal black mark on the front tip of the ring finger’s orange padding and the stitching flaw in the white seam on the tip of the thumb which also has marks that are matched to the media guide cover photo. These same matches also show on another Gretzky action photo in his Oilers road uniform. Awe-inspiring game use includes wonderful wear to the tan leather palms, with more wear on the right glove which has a vintage 2"-diameter round patch glued on the palm where the Great One's magic hands worked a small hole through the leather. More game wear includes black marks on the left glove's other fingers and scuffs to the leather. Amazing pieces of hockey history worn by the game's greatest scorer ever!
