Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024

The greatest player to ever grace the ice of the National Hockey League and still holding a total of 58 records set by him during his career even 24 seasons after he retired from the game, offered here is this stunning original acrylic painting of "The Great One" done on canvas by renowned Edmonton artist Steven Csorba. Using his art as a way to get through cancer treatments and known for his paintings of sports legends like Wayne Gretzky and Muhammad Ali plus his commemorative works celebrating historical events like the Olympic Games and famous teams like Notre Dame Football, Csorba has used a technique of layering and blending qualities of realism, abstraction and dramatic texturing serve to heighten the moment of Gretzky captured in this work of art titled "A Shot of History". Depicting Wayne, the undisputed scoring master of the National Hockey League, in a follow through after a slap shot against his former team, the Los Angeles Kings, while wearing the jersey of the New York Rangers that he did at the end of his career, the unique and bold colour treatment of brilliant gold tones and vibrant red kinetic energy combine to suggest an atmospheric quality of depth and emotion. The bold lines and shattering fragments of paint achieve an almost rhythmic counterpoint in which they "break" the surface of the painting. You experience the intensity of the slap-shot and become deeply engaged with the art and the magic of hockey's greatest player. Measuring a large 40" x 60", the surface remains in excellent condition with no major problems to report while only light wear is seen from age and display. Signed and dated (2005) by the artist, don't miss out on this truly one of a kind offering. Please note that due to the size and/or weight, special shipping arrangements may be required.
