Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2011
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/1/2011
We're absolutely delighted to offer this stunning piece of international ice hockey history, the 1968 Olympic silver medal won by the late Czechoslovakian national team goalie Vladimir Dzurilla. Czechoslovakia fashioned a 5-1-1 record in Grenoble to finish one point behind the U.S.S.R., despite a very satisfying 5-4 win over the Soviets, who claimed gold, and one ahead of Canada to win the silver. Dzurilla, who led the way in goal with a 2.53 goals-against-average, is best remembered in North America for his shutout in Czechoslovakia's stunning 1-0 upset of Team Canada at the inaugural 1976 Canada Cup. He was inducted posthumously into the IIHF Hall of Fame in 1998, three years after his death from a heart attack at the age of 53. Obtained directly from Dzurilla's family, this 1968 Olympic silver medal has been stored for decades in its original blue velvet-lined presentation box, which is included, although the medal's original ribbon is no longer present. Please see our website description for more information about this remarkable piece which comes with a letter of authenticity from the Dzurilla family. The Grenoble 1968 logo is featured on the face of this Olympic silver medal and an image of a hockey player and "Hockey Sur Glace" appear on the reverse. The medal has minor scratches and remains in beautiful condition overall, even though the clasp at the top of the medal is missing a piece and the original ribbon is not present, but rather a red, blue and yellow ribbon that is not attached to the medal. The blue presentation box features the gilded Grenoble Olympic logo on the cover.
