Intimidating through both his muscular physique and aggressive no-holes-barred style of play, HOFer Tim Horton was a major force to be reckoned with throughout his two decades plus of NHL service. Originally purchased directly from Tim’s widow Lori, we have a pair of gloves worn by the mighty Horton, with the possibility existing that these very examples were tossed to the ice with abandon as Tim exerted unforgiving punishment to an unlucky opponent. Cooper Weeks models in Leafs blue with white accents, the left glove has a cloth patch affixed, with all identifiers screened-on, including presently worn Maple Leafs emblems over each wrist guard. Handwritten and faded “7”s are visible along the interior of each, with the design of a cross added nearby. Any items from the tragic career of Tim Horton are highly sought after, with game-worn specimens next to impossible to locate, with these gloves being the first examples we’ve had the pleasure of handling.
Worn primarily in 1958-59 by Toronto, this style of glove saw subsequent use for a pair of additional seasons. Heavy and thorough use is evident, with considerable wear to the finish and leather, along with numerous holes to each palm. There is also stick tape affixed to a pair of fingers on the right glove, no doubt a hasty repair done on the bench by the trainer to keep these obvious favourites in use, with residue present along additional fingers that also once witnessed stick tape repairs. As mentioned, these gloves originate from Tim’s wife, sold to a private collector when a number of items from Tim’s career were sold by the family back in the 1990s. An original bill of sale will accompany these important artifacts.
