Jacques Plante Auction March 2006
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/28/2006
An impressive and magnificent tribute to the legendary Jacques Plante is this trophy produced by The Jacques Plante Foundation in Switzerland, where the famous innovator spent his later years. Created to honor Jacques’ memory following his death in 1986, the huge award is fashioned after the Georges Vezina Trophy and like it, was won by a top goaltender starting with the 1986-87 season. Fittingly, it was awarded to the outstanding netminder of the Swiss league and the engraved metal plaques bear the names of goalies from teams in Davos, Lugano and Bern, among others and include current Montreal Canadiens’ netminder Cristobal Huet who captured the trophy in 1999-2000 and 2000-01 while with HC Lugano. The three-tiered base measures 18” square and features a classy image of the smiling Plante on the front, with a Montreal Canadiens logo below it. The trophy towers close to three feet high with crossed goalie sticks and a puck at the top while a hockey net is surrounded by four pillars. “Trophee Jacques Plante” is engraved on the section which the pillars rise up from. To say the award weighs a ton is an obvious exaggeration but this beauty is heavy. Contained in a padded trunk-like affair, the one-of-a-kind trophy will be accompanied by a letter of authenticity signed by Jacques’ widow, Caroline Plante.
