Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2025
Earning six consecutive 4th place finishes in the especially tough IIHF World Championships during the early-1970s which included powerhouses like the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia, Team Finland recently won gold medals at the tournament in both 2019 and 2022. This Finnish national team jersey originates from the early-1970s, circa-1973, and according to our consignor, was brought to North America from the 1973 IIHF World Championships by former NHL'er and Finnish national team coach Len Lunde. A white knit creation with blue striping bands, there is Kisapuku labeling to the collar and "50-52" sizing, with "Suomi" in individual dual-colour and layered tackle twill letters arching over the Finnish coat of arms on the chest. "25" is sewn to the sleeves and verso in matching material, with no name or nameplate on the upper reverse. Just light wear is exhibited including very faint staining/discolouration on the front and sleeves. While no player wore #25 of the Finns at the 1973 World Championships, it is believed that the jersey may have been part of the junior or senior team sets worn from 1971 to 1973. Additionally, according to research, the only player to wear #25 for the Finns during the era was goalie Tapio Virhimo, who usually served as a back-up to Antti Leppanen.
Circa 1973 Team Finland National Team Game Worn Jersey - IIHF World Juniors
Vintage circa 1972-73 Team Finland white knit #25 jersey brought back from the 1973 World Junior Championships held in Moscow by former NHL'er and Finnish National Junior Team coach Len Lunde. Although no player wore this number at the 1973 World Juniors for Finland, the jersey may have been part of the Junior or Senior team set that was worn from 1971 to 1973. According to research, the only player who wore #25 during that time (early 70s) was goalie Tapio Virhimo. He was usually a back-up goalie for Antti Leppänen, who played the vast majority of team Finland games during those times."
