Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2010
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/16/2010
Marvelous style of championship souvenir of the times is this magnificent creation, the original gold ring that was presented to Montreal Canadiens goalie Rogatien Vachon to commemorate the Habs' 1967-68 Stanley Cup championship. Vachon made his Stanley Cup playoff debut the previous spring when Toronto coach Punch Imlach memorably labeled the Montreal rookie a "junior B goalie" in a show of gamesmanship as a veteran Maple Leafs squad went on to stun the heavily-favored Canadiens to win the Cup. Rogie didn't have to wait very long for an opportunity to redeem himself as the Habs regained bragging rights in the spring of 1968, winning 12 of 13 playoff games to capture their third Cup title in four years. Vachon played two games as HOFer Gump Worsley handled the bulk of the goaltending duty while the Canadiens swept Boston and beat Chicago in five before edging St. Louis in four straight one-goal games in the first final of the expansion era. J.C. Tremblay scored the Cup-winner in the 3-2 clinching game on Forum ice, which marked the end of Toe Blake's successful coaching career. A golden image of hockey's ultimate prize appears on a red stone here, with "World Hockey Champions" encircling it. The left shank features "Vachon" engraved on a banner above a raised image of the Canadiens' famed "CH" logo. A raised gold NHL shield logo appears on the right shank, which features "1967-68" engraved on a banner above it. The size 10 1/4 ring exhibits light-to-moderate wear with "14K" stamped on the interior of the band. This superb Stanley Cup championship ring comes with Rogatien Vachon's signed letter of authenticity.
