First donning an NHL sweater during the early-1960s as a member of the Boston Bruins for parts of two seasons, Pat Stapleton was briefly the property of the Toronto Maple Leafs as part of a trade in 1965, but left unprotected in the intra-league draft, was claimed by Chicago. Seven seasons would be spent in the Windy City, concluding with Stapleton chosen to represent his nation at the historic 1972 Canada-Russia Series in 1972. Seeing action in seven of the eight contests vs the mighty Soviets, Stapleton was often paired with Black Hawks teammate Bill White, and was an impressive +6 (plus/minus) during the historic tournament.
Originating from his personal collection, we are proud to present Pat Stapleton’s crucially important 1972 Team Canada Summit Series road jersey. Tricot Maska labeling sits affixed to the collar, along with the remnants of a second original tag. Styled with the iconic maple leaf ascending from the waistline along the garment’s front section to the mid-chest, “3” is sewn to the verso below “Canada”, with all identifiers constructed in matching single-layer red tackle twill. The white durene material beneath the red maple leaf has NOT been removed to lighten the garment, a trait common to other Team Canada jerseys from the series.
The garment’s red colouration remains deep and vibrant, with a small tear to the material within the maple leaf, with a small hole to the white material directly beneath. There are marks over the sleeves, with some sweat staining to the collar. There is also a bit of discolouration to the reverse including within the number, with a few small red dots visible on the front left shoulder and light red staining to the lower reverse. Getty Image #136277684 (Sept 1972) has been matched to the two groupings of black marks on the back hem, while a second digital image also shows the black marks in the same areas. Lastly, a 2010 photo of Stapleton at home wearing this jersey is showing the red mark on the left shoulder just below the seam. Worn with pride by a prominent member while an entire hockey-centric nation held its breath, this sweater far exceeds its status as just a sports uniform, registering as both a precious Canadian artifact and paramount cultural treasure. An LOA from the Stapleton family will accompany this significant specimen.
