Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2013

This fascinating piece of Montreal Canadiens history is a vintage framed 1922-23 team photo attributed to legendary goaltender Georges Vezina. Nicknamed the Chicoutimi Cucumber, Vezina is pictured in the middle of the photo along with fellow HOFers Didier Pitre, Sprague Cleghorn, Aurele Joliat and coach and GM Leo Dandurand, as well as Berlinguette, Coutu, Boucher, Bouchard and Odie Cleghorn. This vintage photo displays to a size of 8 1/4" x 11 3/4" within its period frame, which measures 10 3/4" x 14 1/4". The top of the print has yellowish staining with unexplained grey stains on the middle top edge and upper left edge, otherwise the photo remains in very nice condition. A rare Canadiens team photo linked to one of the Habs' earliest greats. Our consignor explains that the provenance of this framed photo saw him acquire it some 20 years ago from a dealer, who said that he had obtained it from a descendant of Georges Vezina. The dealer referred to “VE” painted on the board on the back of the frame, which he reported was cut from a board with the Vezina name painted on it.
