The highest and most prestigious award bestowed by the British honours system, the Victoria Cross is awarded for valour "in the presence of the enemy" to members of the British Armed Forces. Six of the sixteen Canadian recipients were honoured after the war in 1945 by Conn Smythe and the Toronto Maple Leafs at MLG for the opening of the 1945-46 NHL season on Saturday, October 27, 1945. Originating from the Maple Leaf Gardens auction, this oversized framed photo originally displayed in Maple Leaf Gardens commemorates the event and pictures all six honourees. At approx 19 ½” x 29” and depicting the war heroes in a relaxed setting with Smythe, pictured from left to right are Major Frederick Albert Tilston, Smythe, Major David Vivian Currie, unidentified, Captain Paul Triquet, Private Ernest 'Smokey' Smith (dropped the puck to open the Leafs season), Corporal Frederick George Topham and Major John Keefer Mahony. A plaque at the base states the particulars, with the desirable large photo set in a period eggshell blue wooden frame to full dimensions of 22” x 32”.
The photo doesn’t appear to sport any issues, with expected wear to the glass and frame, with a stain to the plaque and a few notations on the reverse along with a sticker.
