Wayne Gretzky shocked the hockey world in 1978 by signing a personal services contract with owner Nelson Skalbania's Indianapolis Racers of the World Hockey Association. Gretzky started his professional hockey career with the struggling franchise but his tenure with the club was cut short just eight games into the 1978-79 WHA season when he along with Eddie Mio and Peter Driscoll were sold to the Oilers. This short stint as a Racer produced only a handful of Gretzky collectibles making his memorabilia from this era some of the most prized and difficult items to obtain from his lengthy career. Offered is a game used puck from Gretzky's first ever Indianapolis Racers regular season home game played on October 14, 1978 vs Winnipeg. The story on this well used official WHA InGlasco Indy Racers game puck is that it was plucked from the ice that night by team officials and given to the original owner after the game by the club in appreciation for his volunteer work with the team. Accompanying the puck is a photocopied letter on Racers letterhead thanking the original owner for his assistance with the club during October of 1978. Truly a one-of-a-kind memento from the absolute dawn of Wayne Gretzky's career!
