Edmonton Oilers Auction 2005
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/16/2005
The Edmonton Oilers paid tribute to Hall of Fame goalie and five time Stanley Cup champion Grant Fuhr by retiring his #31 Oilers jersey on October 9th, 2003 during a pre-game ceremony. Fuhr, wearing his old Oilers jersey and full equipment, skated out onto the darkened Rexall Place ice and took his familiar place in net. When the lights came on, the roar of the crowd was deafening when they realized old number 31 was between the pipes wearing his vintage Edmonton Oilers goalie mask one more time! Grant was then honoured at centre ice in a moving pre-game ceremony that will be remembered by fans forever. A few years later Fuhr and the rest of the "Boys on the Bus" converged on Edmonton for three glorious, freezing cold days in November of 2003 as they participated in the "Heritage Classic." In celebration of this historic event the Oilers in cooperation with the City of Edmonton, the NHL and Hockey Hall of Fame set up an interactive "Fan Fest" that took place at City Hall over the course of the Heritage Classic weekend. The highlight of the downtown activities included the formal introduction of the "Mega Stars" teams including Fuhr, Gretzky, Lafleur and the rest of the respective Oilers and Canadiens old timer squads. We are proud to offer the Grant Fuhr #31 Edmonton Oilers Jersey Retirement replica banner that hung in City Hall during the entire Heritage Classic weekend activities. This 8-foot double-sided vinyl display piece is a screened re-creation of the Fuhr jersey retirement banner that hangs in Rexall Place and is in excellent condition. From the archives of the Edmonton Oilers with a team letter of provenance signed by General Manager Kevin Lowe.
