Edmonton Oilers Auction 2005
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/16/2005
When Wayne Gretzky was growing up in Brantford his self-proclaimed summer passion and sport of choice was baseball. Equally adept with a hockey stick or baseball in his hands some say that the Great One could have had a promising career as a pitcher if not for that little hockey thing that he had going at the same time! The rest, as they say, is history and we doubt very much that Wayne has had any regrets in his career selection. Wayne always did enjoy a good ball game and that is what he and the rest of the Oilers put on back on August 3rd, 1980 at the "Fifth Annual Sports Page Celebrity Softball Classic". The charity event held at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton saw four softball teams comprised of NHL players from the Oilers, Islanders and two mixed All-Star teams with players from across the league. Offered here is Wayne Gretzky's entire game worn Oilers uniform from the match including the jersey sporting his familiar "99" on the back along with matching pants and stirrup socks. The uniform is a Maska Superfil according to the collar tagging and, although the size tag has been ripped out, this one looks to be a size large based on others in the set. The jersey shows very light wear with a few marks here and there and comes with on 8x10"black and white photo of Wayne wearing this exact uniform. From the archives of the Edmonton Oilers with a team letter of provenance signed by General Manager Kevin Lowe.
