Edmonton Oilers Auction 2005
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/16/2005
Prior to the start of the 1973-1974 season, the Houston Aeros of the World Hockey Association lured Gordie Howe out of retirement to play alongside his sons Mark and Marty. Gordie Howe scored 100 points during the regular season (31 goals, 69 assists) and was voted the league MVP. Mark Howe won the Rookie of the Year. The Aeros beat the Chicago Cougars 4-0 in the finals to capture their first of two Avco World Trophies. This team-issued Gordie Howe Houston Aeros game jersey was supposedly worn during the preseason and then given away as part of a promotion according to the team's trainer. It has "G. Howe", in the correct font for this season, crossing the nameplate instead of the typical "Gordie Howe" plates that show up in game action photos. The red Rawlings tag is there in the neck, in size 48 and all lettering and numbering is sewn onto the shirt in single-layer tackle twill. The shirt does show a couple of stick marks on the left sleeve, so it appears to have been worn briefly. However, we are selling this heavy dureen jersey as a team issued Gordie Howe uniform from his first year in the World Hockey Association due to the nameplate issue. From the personal collection of Rick "The Stick" Elaschuk with his signed letter of provenance.
