The 1971 Canada Winter Games were held in Saskatoon where hockey was second in attendance with 35,000 fans packing into two arenas to watch the action. In the end undefeated Ontario won the gold led by Bob Gainey and Jimmy Jones who both would go on to become stars in the NHL. Offered here is Gainey’s 1971 “Team Ontario” game-worn alternate captain’s jersey he wore in the tournament. Measuring to a size 40, the untagged knit sweater has an “Ontario” team crest with the partially faded lettering screened on an attached material nameplate. Gainey’s number 14 in tackle twill is affixed on the back with the alternate captain’s “A” on the left breast in the same material. From the same era is the official team jacket Gainey wore when playing for the OHA T.P.T. Petes in 1971-72. Cool pre-NHL items with a signed LOA from Bob Gainey to accompany.
Also included from the 1971 tournament is Gainey’s gold medal (heavy tarnishing on the back of the gold-colored medal) which has a diameter of 2 3/8” and a similar-sized silver-colored affair, most likely a participation medal. A 1970 Province of Ontario pin is also included. The jersey has a few stains on the collar area, including sweat stains to the back collar, and it exhibits nice game wear with pilling throughout, four small unrepaired holes and a trio of team repairs on the lower back. Attached to the collar of the Petes team jacket is a size 42 (dry clean only) tag with the name of the team, and season, embroidered on the left breast and Gainey’s number 14 embroidered on the right sleeve of the jacket which remains in excellent condition.
