Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/16/2020
Longtime rivals Toronto and Montreal star in this large and interesting assembly of Quaker Oats photos, with the Maple Leafs (86) edging the Canadiens (79) in the numbers game, while the two teams are featured in four scarce and desirable action photos of games played at Maple Leaf Gardens in the early-1950s. One half-inch edge tear (photo No. 2) and pinholes at the four corners (No. 4) are to be aware of. Other most notable entries are a Max Bentley locker room photo (light bends, creases), Teeder Kennedy and Syl Apps each holding the Stanley Cup (the latter, despite a tiny edge tear, displays a little better than the former) and a nice group shot featuring many of the men who contributed to Toronto's three straight Stanley Cup titles in the late-1940s. A visible crease through a Leaf executive, bends and a tiny upper edge tear are to note. As for the Canadiens portion/binder, standouts include Toe Blake (all three variations), Floyd Curry still (small edge tear), three different of Bill Durnan, Hal Laycoe portrait (pinhole), John McCormack vertical (pinholes), Mike McMahon, Rocket Richard x 2 (action, still no boards), St. Laurent and Warwick. Overall condition is pleasing with mostly only the almost-standard light bends as minor flaws, when present with additional details on our website.
The Leafs' individual photo lineup also includes scarce examples or more difficult variations of Doug Baldwin, Baz Bastien (pinholes at the corners), Gordie Bell, Mel Hill, Tim Horton, Harry Lumley, Elwin Morris, Eric Nesterenko, Babe Pratt and Stewart, as well as three different of Turk Broda and three additional different of Kennedy. Wonderful and rather scarce complements are two Montreal Canadiens-themed premium booklets for 1948-49 (Durnan and Bouchard on the covers) and '49-50 (Rocket Richard, Reardon), an intriguing (bilingual) one-page letter to inform collectors about photos Quaker could not supply (writing on front) and an unsigned Maple Leafs Bantam Hockey Club membership pledge/certificate (tape marks on corners). Oodles of possibilities with this years-in-the-making ensemble.
