Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/16/2020
One of the most popular collectibles of the Original Six era, Bee Hive hockey player photos produced by the St. Lawrence Starch Co. were a staple for Canadian youth/hockey fans, with this huge lot encompassing a nearly 20-year period of NHL history. All six NHL teams from the era are represented, with Hall of Famers Howe (two different), Sawchuk (2 diff.), Beliveau, Plante, Mahovlich, Hull, Mikita and more among the star power, while also alluring is the assortment of more-difficult-to-locates photos. Add in a couple of cool cans and other desirable Bee Hive memorabilia and this lot has much to offer. The breaks down of the photos is as follows, with challenging photos noted: Boston - 60 (Caffrey, Creighton (dark background) and Sawchuk. Chicago - 65 (Brimsek, Conn, Kennedy, Lunde (2 diff), McNeil (2 diff), Peters, Rollins horizontal and Turner. Detroit - 69 (Bucyk, Enio, Glenn Hall, Rod Morrison and Stasiuk (no blade). Montreal - 63 (Dube (Poor), Durnan, Hanna, Hodge (white script) and Litzenberger). New York - 67 (Bently, Bower, Evans diagonal, Labossiere, Plante and "John" Ratelle). Toronto - 79 (Hassard, McCormack (tape marks), Nykoluk, Solinger and Taylor). Fascinating and less often seen is the nice assortment of Bee Hive memorabilia which includes one-pound and five-pound cans, a (low grade) five-pound can label, seven "collars" (multiple variations), a token which could have been redeemed for two photos at the time, an original (1950) mailing envelope, two original newspaper ads (four-page London (Ontario) Free Press color comic sections from February, 1960), a Bee Hive scribbler and Bee Hive picture lists (creases and writing) for 1951-52, 1960-61, and 1961-62. Overall, condition of this lot, like most groups of Bee Hives' varies, with a majority in nice or acceptable collectible condition, with occasional flaws such as stains, tape, paper loss, creases, punch holes, re-glued photos or writing on the back of the backings spotted. The presentation of the photos is admirable and noteworthy; they're in same-size pages, with a binder devoted to each team - so easy (and fun!) to flip through. The memorabilia ranges in grade, which is understandable due to its original intended use. Like we like to say, "lots of possibilities" with this intriguing stash.
