Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/16/2020
Group I Bee Hive photos here feature some of the biggest stars who skated in the NHL between 1933 and 1943, with the images of Eddie Shore, Aurele Joliat, Charlie Conacher, Busher Jackson, Frank Boucher and Syl Apps among them and joined by much less-heralded big leaguers whose photos often are more valuable than the stars, given the comparable short time that theirs were available. Coveted by kids throughout Canada, the pictures resulted in a lot of corn syrup being consumed in order to get the premiums. Gordie Howe often told a story about his efforts to obtain Bee Hive Corn Syrup labels from neighbours in Saskatoon in order to obtain shots of his favorite players. While there is a wide range of conditions (Poor to NM) within the lot, the majority present nicely in same-size binder pages, with four binders housing the collection. Some re-glued photos, creases/wear, pinholes and other flaws are observed/to be expected. Popular radio personalities of the day Wes McKnight and Foster Hewitt make appearances and the player lowdown is as follows, with more notable examples mentioned: Bruins - 14 (Sands, Shore (pinhole)), Black Hawks - 17 (Bentley brothers, Goodman, Romnes), Red Wings - 20 (Connie Brown, McCaig, McDonald on ice), Canadiens - 26 (Bourque, Brown, Dame, Getliffe, Heffernan, O’Connor (pinhole, re-glued completely), Sands, Trudel (pinhole), Maroons - 13 (MacKenzie (Poor - re-glued, back damage), Runge (re-glued, stains), Shannon), Americans - 17 (O'Flaherty, Rayner (writing on front), Slobodian (writing on back), Stewart), Rangers - 23 (Henry horizontal, Kirk) and Maple Leafs - 46 (Carr (pinhole), Copp, Goldham (stain), Hill, Kilrea, Mann (script over stick), Poile and Gaye Stewart (home - tape marks, paper loss on back) and away - re-glued completely). An original St. Lawrence Starch Co. mailing envelope (1941 postmark with tears, paper loss) in which a young collector would have received pictures of their hockey heroes is a nifty throw-in.
