Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/16/2020
A sometimes-confusing issue and study in itself due to multiple variations, the Diamond Match Co. matchbooks featuring NHL players from the 1930s are one of the hockey collecting hobby’s most underrated treasures. This intriguing batch offers a nifty array, with a dozen of the earliest (silver) examples (from 1933-35) highlighted by covers depicting Hall-of-Famers Bill Cook and Harry Oliver. The balance are tan versions with multiple types represented. A scarce full matchbook, featuring New York Americans' forward Lloyd Klein has survived marvelously with an unstruck striker, with HOFers Ching Johnson (two different), Red Dutton, Syd Howe, Earl Seibert and Carl Voss highlighting the covers. Other notables are Max Kaminsky, Frank Finnigan and goalies Mike Karakas (two different), Andy Aitkenhead and Bill Beveridge, with a total of 11 members of the St. Louis Eagles present. Condition varies due to their intent to be disposable at the time but most are in pleasing collectible condition, with one bobtailed (silver) cover and a half-dozen tans with torn strikers to note. We see them as fascinating pre-war collectibles!
