Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/16/2020
One of the last of the manly men that plunged into the NHL fray without the safety of a helmet, Bob Nystrom would spend his entire 14-season career in the Big Apple with the Islanders, and he’s best remembered for scoring the 1980 Stanley Cup-winning goal in overtime, in Game 6. The Swedish native would win four Stanley Cup championships with New York, with the club retiring the star’s number as well as creating the Bob Nystrom Award in 1991, presented annually to the Islander "who best exemplifies leadership, hustle, and dedication." This New York Islanders jersey was worn by Nystrom during the 1979-80 NHL playoffs and Stanley Cup finals, and it’s been photo-matched, including to Game 2 of the semifinals vs Buffalo, where Nystrom scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime while wearing this very jersey. Partially-detached W.A. Goodman & Sons and Bill Vanderburg labels sit along the collar with “50” sizing, with no other tagging present. Featuring the classic layered tackle twill team crest, “23” appears over the sleeves and verso in white-over-orange twill, with the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics crest situated over the left shoulder. The clasp-style fight strap has been taped closed, and we should note that one of the cuffs was turned inward and hemmed. An LOA will accompany this important inaugural-Islanders Stanley Cup finals-worn jersey.
Exhibiting heavy game-use, there are numerous puck and stick marks over the lower front band, with scuffs and a few small stains to the team crest. Additional marks along with heavy board burns cover the sleeves, with paint transfer near each elbow section. There are also a few small holes/slits over each sleeve, with a trio of team repairs over the right sleeve. It should also be noted that the jersey currently has a fragrant smell, possibly from being sprayed with Febreze to cover the scent of tobacco smoke. Regarding the aforementioned photo-matches, an included numeric image of Nystrom on the bench clearly shows the long line of white loose threads on the top edge of the Olympic patch, while a second included numeric image from the Stanley Cup Finals vs the Flyers has been matched to the black mark on the top edge of the team crest just above the "Y" of NY. Lastly, a third included numeric image of Nystrom celebrating his game-winning goal in the second overtime of the game 2 of the semifinals against the Buffalo Sabres has been matched to the long line of white loose threads on the top edge of the Olympic patch, and to the smaller area of white loose threads on the lower edge of the Olympic patch. A DVD will also accompany, with clips of the following games showing Nystrom wearing this blue jersey; Quarterfinals Game #2 vs Boston Bruins, Semifinals Game #2 vs Buffalo Sabres and Stanley Cup Finals Game #1 vs Philadelphia Flyers.
