Selected to play in the NHL All-Star Game in just his fourth season, Bob Gainey would appear in four best-on-best showcases throughout his HOF career, from 1977 to 1981. This NHL Wales Conference jersey was worn by the superstar in the 1977 All-Star Game, and it hails from his personal collection. Slated to play in the 1977 contest, Steve Shutt was a first Team Selection but elected to stay by the side of his pregnant wife and was replaced by Gainey, with the original "Shutt" nameplate visible under the "Gainey" nameplate when viewing through the interior of the jersey. Shutt’s usual #22 was already taken by Brad Park, so it appears that Shutt was given the #23 jersey, with no evidence visible of any number changes over the sleeves and verso. A signed LOA from Bob Gainey will accompany this unique sweater.
A Gerry Cosby label is affixed to the collar, with a “48” size swatch placed just above. Featuring an embroidered NHL shield team crest, the durene V-neck sports additional shields over both breasts and shoulders, with each sleeve adorned with a white star adhered between the dual-colour striping bands, with another half dozen matching examples evenly spaced across the front and reverse lower band. “23” appears over the sleeves and verso in black-over-white tackle twill, with “Gainey” in reversed individual white letters with black trim placed directly over the upper reverse. Worn for just a single contest, the jersey exhibits light wear including a few marks over the left sleeve.
