Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/16/2020
Well folks, the exclamation point after "Much More" in the title is especially appropriate here, with a collection of Quaker Oats premiums unlike we, (and likely others) have ever seen before - extremely fascinating(!) and starring the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens. The oldest items date back to 1938-39 and a Maple Leaf Bantam Hockey Club membership book and pinback, the latter heralding the Toronto Maple Leafs as NHL Champions. The Bantam Hockey Club returned when Quaker Oats introduced its 8" by 10" photo promotion in the mid-1940s and we'll give you the rundown of Maple Leafs-related items in chronological order and then the Canadiens items and finally, swell miscellaneous goodies. For all of the juicy details, please see our website.
From 1945-46 are a pinback (with "Stanley Cup Winners" notation), three membership books and four membership club certificates. From '46-47 are a crest, a membership booklet, three pinbacks and a March 13, 1947-postmarked postcard featuring a team photo of the Maple Leafs. Items from '47-48 are two Hap Day "How to play Better Hockey" booklets (writing on the front and back of one), while'48-49 representatives include a booklet with a lefthanded-shooting Ted Kennedy on the cover and a club certificate. "Teeder" also appears on a membership booklet from '49-50 and two certificates, with one looking to have been autographed by the Toronto star beneath his photo. An image of one of Kennedy's Quaker Oats photos is featured on three scarce ads/checklists (two different), with writing/marks on each and available premiums for boys and girls on the reverse. .....Now then, for the Montreal Canadiens entries. Premium booklets from '46-47 and '47-48 are bilingual, while one from '49-50 features Maurice Richard on the cover and is only in French, similar to a "Comment Ameliorer Votre Hockey" (How to Improve Your Hockey) 32-page booklet by Dick Irvin. A Habs crest is also present. .....Additional items are five different newspaper ads and/or order forms/coupons, (three of them Leafs-related and two offering Canadiens premiums), five miscellaneous mailing envelopes, an actual Quaker Oats box top and two baseball-related items; an ad (for baseballs and softballs) and a "How To Play Baseball" booklet by Yale University coach Ethan Allen. Overall, condition is pleasing and we believe that you will indeed be more than pleased in acquiring this sensational stash from a Quaker Oats aficionado - kudos to our consignor
