Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/16/2020
A collection unto itself and obtainable with just a single bid, this large postcard grouping totals approx 145, with examples present from early in the century right up until the 1970s. Included, we have 6 postcards featuring the classic image of the Montreal winged-wheelers in action at the famous Victoria Skating Rink, with just a pair of duplicates, followed by 17 team photo postcards, highlighted by examples for the 1933 Allan Cup-champion Moncton Hawks and the Quebec Aces from the 1950s. Next, we have 11 female/cartoon postcards including an image of a circa-1908 women's team from Toronto. This is followed by 45 buildings/venues postcards including Duquesne Garden, Boston Garden, MLG, MSG, Chicago Stadium and others, 19 action shot postcards including McGill and Davos, and 48 individual-player postcards, including Howe, Hull, Sawchuk, Gretzky and others.
It should be noted that there is some duplication within the collection, especially with the building/venues, with the individual-player postcards featuring a heavy concentration of JD McCarthy Redwings examples including Ullman (2 different), Dionne, Delvecchio, Gadsby, Pronovost (2 different), and others. There are also 5 different Wembley Monarchs player postcards from the 1930s, and a pair of matching Chicago Black Hawks WCFL radio broadcast postcards featuring Johnny Gottselig, with each signed over the reverse by the noteworthy star. Condition in the collection ranges throughout, with a number of the earlier examples showing heavier surface, corner and edge wear along with the odd crease, with most of the JD McCarthy postcards trimmed.
