The two top teams at the conclusion of the 1988-89 NHL season and separated by a single victory, the Montreal Canadiens and Calgary Flames met in the Stanley Cup finals after each club thoroughly dispatched of their playoff opponents, with the Habs taking home the victory in six games. This photo-matched Canadiens captain’s jersey was worn by HOF member Bob Gainey in the 1989 Stanley Cup finals, and it is most likely his last Habs sweater, as Montreal was wearing their home whites in Game 6, the last game of the finals, played at the Montreal Forum. Measuring-out to roughly a size 54, a Maska Ultrafil label with “1989 Cup Final” handwritten over the reverse is affixed to the collar, with an embroidered CCM crest over the reverse bottom hem. Styled with the iconic CH team crest constructed entirely of layered tackle twill, “23” appears over the sleeves and verso in matching material along with the captain’s “C”, with “Gainey” across the affixed nameplate in single blue twill. The important 1989 Stanley Cup patch resides over the left shoulder, with the dual-clasp fight strap intact. Hailing from his personal collection, a signed LOA from Bob Gainey will accompany this highly desirable Stanley Cup finals jersey.
Exhibiting a few small stains over the upper and lower front, additional marks and faint burns are visible over each sleeve, with a bit of fraying to the threading of the team crest and reverse numbers. There is also some light pilling to the interior beneath the fight strap. Getty Image #856003702 (Stanley Cup Finals May, 1989) has been matched to the loose thread visible on the “3” of “23” on the left sleeve as well as to the loose red thread visible on the lower left corner of the “3” and to the small black mark located about 1 3/4" above the "3", to a number of blue loose threads on the nameplate in the letters "I", "N" and "Y", to the long loose white thread on the top left corner of the nameplate and to the perfect matching of all the details of the "3" including placement/spacing of the blue over the red material. The small red thread on the lower left corner of the "3" of "23" on the back of the jersey is also visible on this photo, as is the small blue thread on the right middle edge of the "2" of "23" on the back of the jersey.
