The Stanley Cup champion Toronto Maple Leafs played their third straight game against the NHL All-Stars on October 10th 1949. This third edition of the All-Star Game saw the ill-fated Bill Barilko open the scoring for the Leafs, only to have the All-Stars follow with three unanswered goals to win it 3-1. Originating from the incomparable autograph collection of E. Robert Hamlyn, we have a team photo of the 1949 "NHL All-Stars" which has been signed by 12. The All-Star cast includes signatures of nine deceased HOFers; Jack Stewart, Bill Mosienko, Sid Abel, Ted Lindsay, Bill Quackenbush, Doug Bentley, Gordie Howe, Roy Conacher and Tommy Yvan. The remaining signers are Carl Mattson (trainer), Tony Leswick and Bob Goldham. The 8” x 10” glossy black and white photo has a Turofsky stamp on its back and remains in good condition despite many fold marks, small creases and corner wear.
The signatures of Jack Stewart, Bill Mosienko, Doug Bentley and Roy Conacher are the nicest and boldest. The autographs of Ivan, Lindsay, Quackenbush and Howe each have areas where it seems the ink didn’t adhere well to the glossy finish of the photo but their signatures are still easily legible.
