Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2020

A current member of the Belfast Giants in the EIHL, netminder Shane Owen has guarded the creases of numerous clubs in the ECHL, with his junior career beginning with the Erie Otters, in 2007-08. The Markham native would spend parts of three seasons in the OHL, and after 12 games with Erie in 2009-10, Owen would then play the reminder of the season in the Q with Moncton, helping the club capture the QMJHL Championship along with a berth in the 2010 Memorial Cup. From his time with Erie circa 2008-10, we have a mask worn by Owen. An Itech model with intact cage, strapping and interior padding, the mask feature’s an intricately-designed paint job with “29” over the chin section, along with “Erie” over each side and a vicious otter decorating the top section. Additional graphics cover the back plate including a logo from Gilders Design, with “Bauer” placed over the forehead Itech logo at some point. A number of Getty Images show Owen wearing this mask with Erie, but we were unable to locate any showing the mask with the added “Bauer”. The possibility exists that when Owen transitioned from Erie and the OHL to Moncton and the QMJHL during the 2009-10 season, his sponsorship changed, with the “Bauer” then added.
Exhibiting heavy game-use, a number of surface chips are present including over the chin section and along the top, with numerous small edge chips also visible. There is some surface crazing as well, with residue over the right ear section from something previously affixed. Getty Images #84841465 and #84841466 (both from Feb 13, 2009) appear to show the dark mark on the back plate beneath the clover, but the images are not high resolution enough to call a definitive photo-match.
