Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/6/2018
The first such games played by NHL teams outside of North America, the Montreal Canadiens and Detroit Red Wings – both eliminated from Stanley Cup contention in the spring of 1938 – embarked on an ambitious 9-game tour of Europe, with matches to be played in Paris, London and Brighton. We have a postcard from the excursion that was sent home by Canadiens’ representative and HOFer Babe Siebert, along with a small photo and business card. The Paris postcard feature’s intact European stamps along with a 1938 postmark date, with a lengthy letter written in fountain pen by Babe to a loved one, with mention of visiting a “wholesale perfume place”. Signed simply “Babe”, the postcard has been encapsulated and labeled “Authentic Auto” by the good people at PSA/DNA, with the small autograph displaying well.
The accompanying black and white photo is just under 3” x 5”, and it picture’s Babe along with a female companion, with both attired in swimwear. “1938” has been handwritten in pencil over the reverse along with “22”, with just light wear present. The business card is standard in size and issued for the Vipond-Tolhurst Coal Company Limited, with “A. C. ‘Babe’ Siebert” front and center, along with a company logo, phone numbers and “Montreal”. Of the 9-played games, the Canadiens won 5, Detroit 2, with 1 tie.
