Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/6/2018
Closing up shop upon the WHA’s Jersey Knights relocation to San Diego, the Gulls played in the WHL for eight seasons, playing in what is now the Valley View Casino Center. We have a large and attractive San Diego Gulls perpetual trophy, originally awarded for MVP status. Used throughout the club’s existence and awarded on an annual basis to 8 different players from 1967 to 1974, the 28” award features a tiered wooden base with central column, with gold-coloured trophy cup and mounted generic player finial. A metal plaque has been affixed to the central column, with each recipient listed along with his year honoured including Les Binkley (1967), Gordon Sinclair (1968), Warren Hynes (1969), Len Ronson (1970), Gerry Goyer (1971), George Swarbrick (1972), Ken Broderick (1973) and John Adams (1974). A paper-over-cardboard plate mounted to the base states, “Dan Diego Gulls Most Valuable Player”.
It should be noted that the paper/cardboard plaque over the base of the trophy may be a replacement, but this appears to be of some vintage. Moderate wear is present throughout, with minor surface loss to the mounted trophy bowl and player, with the hockey stick currently bent. There are also a few scratches to the affixed name plaque, with a few dings and marks to the wooden base and column. The trophy bowl (with mounted player) is also able to swivel somewhat.
