Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2018

Classic team photos issued by CCM make up the bulk of this offering, but we'll lead with a less-often-seen and rather riveting group shot, that of the 1935-36 Chicago Blackhawks. Bright vivid colors strike the beholder, who quickly zeroes-in on the trio front and center, with the iconic Howie Morenz sitting between Chicago legends Mush March and Johnny Gottselig. Goalies are Lorne Chabot and Mike Karakas. On thick paper stock and measuring a little over 9" by 11-1/2", the picture is VG with some mostly peripheral creasing in the left side and not affecting the superb image. Best of the CCM representatives are eight green-bordered pictures, with the 1934-35 Stanley Cup champion Montreal Maroons and the Toronto Maple Leafs appearing in full-body poses and the Boston Bruins pictured in a more conventional team photo. Non-NHL teams are the Boston Cubs, Halifax Wolverines and Winnipeg Monarchs, with individual shots of Charlie Conacher and Frank Boucher also present. An intermittent edge tear and/or crease is spotted throughout the group, which averages VG, with no real unsightly flaws to mention. The remainder come from a dismantled scrapbook and are considered low grade, with however intriguing images offered on the front and some interesting backs. Grey border affairs with scrapbook paper on the reverse picture the '32-33 Cup champion Rangers, the Cup finalist Maple Leafs (no paper on the reverse but with a trimmed/tattered top edge), the Moncton Hawks and Newmarket juniors. With newspaper clippings showing 1930s action on the back is a picture of young broadcaster Foster Hewitt. Completing the stash are eight maroon border team photos, all with newspaper clippings (mostly posed player photos) on the back. The stars in the Ace Bailey Benefit game, the Canadiens, Leafs, Americans, Red Wings, Black Hawks, Moncton Hawks and St. Michael's College appear in such form, while Bruins and Providence Reds pictures are trimmed, with just a strip of scrapbook paper along the upper back. Multiple possibilities with this pre-war hoard, with a few additional newspaper clippings tossed onto the pile.
