Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/27/2018
While not impossible to locate, antique hockey postcards are highly desirable, with specimens featuring historically important teams quite scarce and highly contested over when offered. We have a wonderful collection of 7, highlighted by examples featuring the 1908 Renfrew Millionaires and 1906 Queens University. Federal League champions, when Renfrew owner Ambrose OBrien was refused entry into the more competitive Canadian Hockey Association, he created the NHA. Cameo images of team members are pictured on the Renfrew postcard, with crossed hockey sticks. The 1906 Queens University postcard - Inter-Collegiate champions of Canada who challenged for the famous Stanley Cup in February of that year – feature’s all members posed on the steps of a prominent building, with writing on both the front and reverse.
All roughly the standard 3 ½” x 5 ½” postcard size, the 1908 Renfrew card features a clean back with heavy toning, with a few creases, heavy corner wear and a clipped upper left corner. There are also a few small stains on the reverse. The Queens postcard shows considerable corner, edge and surface wear, with heavy toning to the reverse along with an intact 1906 stamp. The remaining postcards in the collection include an example for the Silverland Hockey Team (clean back, light wear and spotting with a large crease), “Club Charlemagne” from 1947-48 (fairly clean with surface wear and scratches), a generic example with a 1912 postmark (toning, corner/surface wear, creases, postmark imprint and writing on the reverse) and a pair of different postcards that seem to feature the same “VCC” team (both have writing on the reverse – one listing the players – with that example exhibiting heavier wear including corner creases and toning).
