The son of early professional star Oliver Seibert, Earl first appeared for the Springfield Indians of the CAHL, wrapping up a pair of successful seasons before moving onto Manhattan and the Blueshirts. Five seasons would be played for the Rangers before making the transition to the club the Berlin native is best remembered playing with, the Chicago Black Hawks. Known for his tough play, the rugged defenceman’s physical prowess was nearly unmatched, as even league iron man Eddie Shore famously refused to drop the gloves with the especially large defender. Named to the 1st or 2nd All-Star Team each year between 1935 and 1944, Seibert would conclude his 15-season NHL career in Detroit, joining his father in the HOF in 1963, the first father/son pair to be inducted.
We have a hugely desirable and extremely rare-style Chicago Black Hawks sweater that was obtained directly from the Seibert estate and worn by Earl circa 1941-45. This particular style was used by the Black Hawks from 1941 to 1946-47 selectively, as the “barber pole” examples were the regular sweaters donned by the club during this period. A perfect Lowe & Campbell cloth label (size 44) with dry clean fly tag sits affixed to the inside hem, with the collar void of any tagging. Styled with oversized front and verso numbers featuring a black velour-like material layered over red felt, with a gorgeous multi-coloured embroidered Indian head felt crest situated over the upper right sleeve. Thin black and red striping bands have also been utilized on the sleeves of the cream-coloured wool, with a red lower band that repeats over the shoulders, finished in black trim. Surviving in admirable condition with the wool and material still soft and supple, a small team repair is visible near the right shoulder, with a number of small holes present along both the front and reverse, as well as on the sleeves and over the lower front and reverse bands. Despite these minor imperfections, the sweater exhibits wonderful bright colours, and displays brilliantly.
Combining the factors of both rarity and importance, this scarce-style Chicago Black Hawks sweater worn by HOFer Earl Seibert should elicit proper attention, as placement within only the elitist of hobby holdings is more than appropriate for the vintage wool. An LOA from Classic Auctions will accompany.
