Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/7/2017
Referred to by collectors as Cowan Tiles, these 6” by 6” ceramic affairs were reportedly meant to be sold at NHL arenas but speculation is that licensing issues led to them never being released to the public, and despite most apparently being destroyed, a fairly large number have survived. Over 100 different players exist, with “SCREENART PRODUCTS LTD. – Made in Canada” appearing on the cork backing of each along with an attached grommet for hanging. “H.M. Cowan”, thought to be the artist’s name, joins the colourful images. We have 7 examples from the series for your collecting pleasure, including HOFers Geoffrion, Howell and Henri Richard, along with Red Berenson, J.C. Tremblay, Tom Williams and Bob Nevin.
Each tile comes in its original box (except Nevin and Williams – with no lid for the Tremblay tile), with each showing light but varying degrees of wear. Each tile survives in beautiful condition with just the odd minor blemish, except for the Howell example that has had the upper left corner broken, with two loose but still intact pieces.
