Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/7/2017
Given away to eager children to entice business at Esso gas stations during the 1952-53 season, the petroleum retailer produced these Hockey Night in Canada colouring books, which could also be ordered for a dime-a-piece through the subscribed “Happy Motoring” monthly magazine. We have a beautiful high-grade example, along with the associated Happy Motoring magazine, a sales builder book that pictures the colouring books, a pair of order forms, cover letters, unused station receipt and original envelope. The colouring book features game action on the covers, with Gerry MeNeil, Butch Bouchard and Sid Smith pictured, and as previously mentioned, the children's keepsake remains in wonderful condition, with just a bit of light wear along the spine.
The two accompanying Esso booklets both feature the colouring book, with each exhibiting expected wear from their prior use, with a few creases to the “Business Builder” booklet along with some dark toning along the top border of the back cover. The cover letters and order forms also show wear commensurate with the item’s intended use, with the accompanying business-sized envelope showing heavy toning along with foxing.
