Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/7/2017
The morning and evening chore of brushing one’s teeth was actually something to look forward to for youngsters in the early-1970s thanks to the good people at Colgate, with the oral hygiene giant’s release of their hockey stamps in 1970-71, followed up by the “Hockey Heads” mini-busts issued in 1971-72. We have a great Colgate collection that encompasses both releases, with a complete set of 1970-71 stamps on three sheets (31 stamps a sheet – complete at 93) with an additional pair of sheets, along with a starter set of Colgate Hockey Heads, with 10 different examples present from the 17-bust set including Plante, Dryden, Orr, Henderson and others. Also included, we have an original toothpaste box advertising the stamps, calendar sheet and calendar sheet store display.
The other Colgate Hockey Heads included are Cournoyer, Ratelle, Unger, Tallon, Ullmann (error) and Walt Tkaczuk. Each head displays nicely, with just some minor dirt spots on the face of the Tallon bust. The three stamp sheets that constitute a complete set are all still attached and are in excellent condition with light wear, with the additional two sheets accounting for the second (32-61) and third (62-93) in the set, with the 62-93 sheet showing separations along perforations, with the sheet still attached. The Colgate toothpaste box (displaying flat with no remaining side flaps) shows wear along edges, while the calendar store display shows light edge wear with a small stain. Lastly, the 7” x 8 ½” calendar sheet exhibits a horizontal fold line, along with some toning and light edge wear.
