Surviving in a miraculous state of preservation, we are especially honored to be able to offer an Ottawa Senators wool sweater from the original incarnation of the club, with this example worn by Nick Wasnie during the historic franchise’s last season in 1933-34 before being re-established in the early-1990s, and amazingly, it’s been photo-matched! Wasnie spent time in his career in both the NHL and AHA primarily, seeing action with the Black Hawks, Eagles and Americans, with just a single season spent in Ottawa during the club’s final NHL swan song season in 1933-34. The Winnipegger also skated with the Canadiens, immortalized by his back-to-back Cup wins with the Habs in both 1930 and 1931. This stunning wool creation originates from the Wasnie family, with Nick’s nod to posterity to thank for the survival of this amazing specimen.
Void of any labeling along the collar, a nicely preserved tag from Scot Brand in Toronto remains tightly affixed to the inside hem, just beneath the right hand seam. Styled with the iconic large “O” across the chest administed in tri-layer black over white over red felt, the vintage sweater also utilizes the red, white and black striping bands the club is famous for. “14” appears on verso, with the base of the letters matching the team crest in both style and material, with the numbers affixed to a square canvas-style plate. As mentioned, the sweater survives in absolutely wonderful condition, with just some light bleeding/staining at the armpit sections. There is also some very minor spot staining just above the right breast, with a small hole on the reverse just beneath the right shoulder. An image of our sweater’s team crest has been superimposed over an included numeric image of Wasnie in his Senators sweater, with the placement of the crest a perfect match, leaving absolutely no doubt as to the authenticity.
One of the most storied hockey franchises in history both before and after the emergence of the NHL, the original Senators were Stanley Cup champions on an amazing 11 occasions, with consecutive victories as the highly venerated Silver Seven in 1903, 1904, 1905 and 1906. Included in the club’s exceptional membership are HOFers Clint Benedict, King Clancy, Fred "Cyclone" Taylor, Alec Connell, Percy LeSueur, Tommy Phillips, Harvey Pulford, Bruce Stuart, Frank McGee and many others. Remaining NHL wool sweaters from the depression era are literally non-existant, with examples from arguably one of the most important club’s in history impossible to locate. An LOA from Classic Auctions will accompany, and please take note that this item may be subject to a silent reserve.
